Say No to Plastic Straws
Because of their shape and size, plastic straws are uniquely harmful to marine life. Creatures like turtles and dolphins can accidentally swallow them and be badly injured, or even killed. What can you do to protect these animals and their habitats? Say no to plastic straws!

Action Steps & Tips
Introduction
It seems odd that we use plastic straws that only last us five minutes, but will last in our oceans for hundreds of years. It’s easy to start saying no to them! By taking this action, you’ll protect marine life and reduce carbon emissions from plastic production.
1Just say No
Tell your server you don’t want a straw. When you’re eating out and ordering a beverage, tell your server you don’t want a straw. It might seem a little awkward, but it’s easy and will really make a difference! In addition to not using a straw, by talking about it you’re making it easier for others to do the same. You may even encourage the restaurant to start asking customers before providing a straw, or only including them on request.
2Bring a reusable straw
Try a reusable straw. If you really enjoy drinking through a straw, pick up a reusable straw or two that you can bring with you when you eat out. There are many different options available. Metal is often the best option - it’s easy to clean, safe to carry and lightweight. Silicone is another good option for drinking very cold or hot liquid and is also great for kids. Be sure to also get the wire brush straw cleaner for quick and easy cleaning!
Extra Credit - Be an advocate! Cities and towns across the country are passing plastic straw bans. Where does your community stand on these issues? If you don’t have policies like this, let your elected representatives know how important this issue is to you.
While it’s incredible for you to make these choices on your own, it’s even more impactful for you to team up with your neighbors and make sustainability the standard for your community. Then take credit with our Volunteer for a Local Effort Action!
